How MOMMY BRAIN AFFECTS our PARENT PARTNERS and STUDENTS:
''Mommy brain" -- used to describe that spacey, sleep-deprived state when mothers tend to forget things and act scatterbrained. This usually starts after mothers give birth. But besides not being able to focus on responsibilities outside child rearing, it may actually trigger brain growth, with changes in areas of the brain responsible for shaping warm and efficient parental behavior, according to new research.
''We observed increases in gray matter in many areas of the brain ... which play an important role for maternal motivation and reward processing," says Pilyoung Kim, PhD, a developmental psychologist and post-doctoral researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health, who did the research while at Yale University.
Learning that mothers of our students may exhibit different levels of this "MOMMY BRAIN", we can use our positions as their child's art teachers in showing support for or being in-sync with their maternal motivations.
